Popcorn Ceilings

If you want to modernize your home just remove the dreaded acoustic ceiling. Otherwise called "popcorn" or "cottage cheese," you can start by removing the ugly, bumpy surface. Calling these ceilings out of style is an understatement.

"People don't like them anymore," says Bridget Morrissey, an realtor with RE/MAX Coast and Country in Olde Mistick Village. "Like an old kitchen or bath, they give the house a dated appearance."

Popcorn ceilings also lower a home’s value. "The cost of removal goes into the final cost of a house and the buyer is going to negotiate down," Morrissey says. She notes that popcorn ceilings are also dust traps and hard to maintain, because cleaning them can rub off the some of the acoustic material and damage the ceiling.

Yesterday’s fad

Why do so many homes have a popcorn ceiling to begin with? Some say it was a noise deterrent while others say it hid mistakes in the large expanse of a ceiling.

"It became popular because it was easy for builders to apply, and hid a multitude of sins," said Tom Kraeutler, host of "The Money Pit," a nationally syndicated home improvement radio show.

The ceilings were the latest thing in the late 1950s and then fell out of favor according to the National Association of Home Builders.
